Our first trip to the farm:
Dad's bring your child to school day!
Scissor Centers
In room 109 we have been learning how to properly use our classroom tools. Scissors are a VERY important tool for young learners to use as it helps to build the fine and gross motor skills needed to strengthen their pencil grip and write with ease! it is important that the children learn how to use scissors properly. Please make sure that you have a pair of child-safe scissors at home that your child can access for homework as we will frequently assign cutting for homework. At Open House I will be sending home various fine motor activities for you to do with your child to help strengthen these muscles as well!
Once learning about how to properly use scissors, we had scissor centers! The children rotated through four centers. (These are fun centers that are easy to recreate at home!)
1. Cutting Play-Doh - students made play-doh snakes and then cut them into small pieces!
2. Bracelets- Students cut straws and then used there pinchers to string pipe cleaners with the straw pieces and make a bracelet!
3. Spaghetti & Scissors - Students cut spaghetti with their scissors.
4. Scissor Hair cut- Students cut strips and made "hair" on their "person" and then gave them a hair cut!
Check out some fun pictures below!

Welcome Back!
Welcome to my class! In our classroom we have a mix of Kindergarten and First Grade students. Having two grade levels in the classroom allows us to work in small groups and meet the individual need of each student. Each and every student will have work personalized for them and their needs. In this classroom each student will get what they need! As each individual student has different needs, this will look different for every child. I am excited to watch your child learn and grow throughout the year! Please use this online website for resources, updates and important dates and information!

Mr. Angelo the author!
Mr. Angelo DeCesare the author of Flip's Fantastic Journal, gave us a visit! He taught us how to draw some of his characters by doing a directed drawing! We had a blast!
Jump and PLay!
Shapes are everywhere!
Our next unit in Math is shapes! Students have been exploring the different types of 2D shapes. Next week we will learn about 3D shapes! We then will be comparing and contrasting the 2D and 3D shapes!
Turkey Trouble!
We read the story "Turkey Trouble" by Wendy Silvano and that gave us the idea to help our friend Turkey out! Students helped to disguise our Turkey so that the Turkey was safe for Thanksgiving! We loved presenting our turkey, and displaying them in our classroom!
Harvest festival
We were so excited to celebrate thanksgiving in a different kind of way! We had some families volunteer to come and help us celebrate! Each parent was in charge of their own learning center. We had 4 different learning centers.
1. Mayflower: We made the Mayflower using tin foil boats. We then used straws to act as wind and had boat race!
2: Turkey Puppets: We made turkey puppets using paper bags, and feathers that e cut out of paper!
3. Bean Bags: Students were given a word. They had to throw the beanbag into the corresponding bushel!
4. Robot Mouse: The students had to program the mouse to collect leaves that had HFW!
We had a blast! A special thanks to the families who volunteered to help us! We can't wait for our next Solstice Celebration!

5 Senses Workshop
Ms. Jasmine and Ms. Carla from the New York Hall of Science came to visit us! PS 62 has a partnership with the NY Hall of Science so they are always around doing fun activities with us! Today they came into the classroom to do a 5 senses workshop! The students had to use their 5 senses to complete various activities. We had so much fun!
Queens Farm Museum
Our trip to the farm museum was TONS of fun! We got to go on a hay ride, see many different animals like chickens, cows, goats, and alpacas. We even got to feed the goats! I hope you enjoyed your pumpkin at home! We look forward to our next trip!
Halloween Fine & Gross Motor Fun!
Halloween was a spook-tacular day in room 109! We had so much fun on our Halloween walk and completing Halloween activities throughout the day! In room 109 we focus on building our fine and gross motor skills! The development of these skills makes our daily activities easier! Building these skills and muscles will help us to zip our coat, write, color, eat, etc! Check out some of our fun activities below!
My 5 Senses:
Pumpkin Exploration
To kick off our 5 senses unit, I decided it would be fun to explore our five senses using a pumpkin! We started our discovery based unit by identifying what "that round orange thing" on the carpet was. Students explained their thinking and how they knew it was a pumpkin. Sohail said "I saw it at the store," other friends said "I see them with faces and teeth!" We then used different tools to explore our pumpkin using our five senses!
The Five Senses Unit:
In this unit students will learn to use cognitive and language development by encouraging children to observe things in their immediate environment and begin to describe them in detail. Through shared reading, read alouds students will learn to use observations to make predictions. Through this work they will develop skills in remembering important information and asking questions to explore a text or acquire more information. They will demonstrate their learning by writing an informative piece about the five senses.

Stop & Shop
We had so much fun on our first field trip to stop and shop! We got to tour the grocery store. Our tour guide, Alexandra taught us all about the different kinds of foods you din in the grocery store! She also taught us that our plates should have fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins! She gave us a goodie bag to bring back to the classroom with snacks, juice and a pencil! Stop & Shop was a blast!
Sensory Letters
Each day we focus on a new letter and letter sound following our Jolly Phonics curriculum! We practice writing the letters on paper, communicators, and then we practice using a multi-sensory approach to learning! By using a multi-sensory approach, learning is stimulated by engaging students on multiple different levels. Students use all of their senses to explore their learning and make sense of the world around them!
High frequency word fun!
We have begun to learn high frequency words in our class! The children will frequently see these words while they are reading. They are also words that may be difficult for the students to sound out phonetically. Please work with your child on these words every night. The words of the week will be on the homework sheet weekly. Here are some fun ways that we reinforce at school.

Guided Reading Folders
Guided reading folders will be coming home each day starting next week(Week of 10/2). They must returned to school EVERYDAY! This folder is very important as it acts as a communication between home and school. 1-2 times Bi-weekly I will be meeting individually with each child to set individualized reading goals. They will each receive a power goal, and a list of words/letter sounds to work on. While you are reading with your child please work on this power goal and review sounds. There will be flash cards in the folder, please practice these sounds/letters with your child each night, in addition to the homework letters/words assigned.
Inside the folder you will find the following:
- A ziploc bag with flash cards (please use them and keep them inside of the bag)
- A Power Goal Sheet (This will update. Please work on this goal with your child and keep sheet inside of the folder
- Books - Please read and return books daily. The books will change 1-2 times a week. It is important at this age for children to read books continuously.
- A note explaining what level your child is on. I encourage you to read that note and work with your child on what they should be focusing on. Also, this allows you to purchase from scholastic or, take out books on your child's level.
Jolly Phonics
Each day we practice our Jolly Phonics! This program focuses on the letter sound at the onset of the program instead of the letter name. Students are practicing the lower case letters only at this time. Please practice these letters and their sounds with your child every night. Each sound has a song. You can find them on youtube. See below for the link!

Fine Motor fun!
In our class we are working on building the fine motor muscles in our hands, and gross motor muscles in our bodies! These activities are built into our daily classroom routines and lessons. This is an extremely important pre-writing skill. The stronger the students muscles are, the easier it will be for them to write their name and letters!
Here are some tips and tricks you can use at home to help build students fine motor muscles:
-When they are taking tubs/showers, put some shaving cream on the wall and have them practice writing their name, letters and numbers.
-When watching tv, or playing on a tablet, encourage your child to lay on their stomach! This helps to build
-Give them a soup ladle or a turkey baster in the bath tub
-Have your child use small pencils to give them more control when doing homework
-Give them modeling clay instead of Play-doh
-Have scissors readily available at home so students can practice their cutting skills
Check out some of the fun ways we have been building our muscles in room 114!
Mr. Tennis Ball- Students "feed" the tennis ball by finding our letter of the day and using one hand to feed him, and the other to squeeze the ball and open his mouth.
Mr. Bumpy- Students use a sensory approach to writing where they put plastic quilt under their paper to give their writing texture!
Letter Hole Punch- Students match and identify letters, and hole punch the corresponding letters.
Roll & Stick- Students use a dice and stickers for math. They roll the dice and write the numeral. Then, they put the corresponding amount of stickers in the box! Boy, those stickers can be tricky!
